In this powerful episode of Our Journey to Hope, we explore the deeper meaning behind two often quoted promises: Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God,” and Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord.” Are these verses promises of earthly wealth and comfort, or do they point us toward something far greater?

Together, we uncover how Jesus calls us beyond anxiety over temporary things and into the eternal pursuit of God’s Kingdom, while Psalm 37 reveals that true delight in the Lord transforms our desires until God Himself becomes our greatest treasure.

This episode offers encouragement for anyone wrestling with worry, misplaced priorities, or the search for lasting hope. Discover how seeking God first reshapes our hearts, redefines blessing, and anchors us in the treasure that cannot fade.

When we seek the Kingdom, we find the King. And in Him, we find the hope our hearts were truly made for.

Hello friends, I'm your host, Dr. Dave Leighton, and thank you for joining me on our journey to hope. This podcast is a place where together we explore how to discover, sustain, and sometimes regain hope. Wherever you're listening, let's take a deep breath, open our hearts, and continue this journey towards hope. And remember, no one walks alone. In this episode,

Speaker

I'm looking at a life-changing truth. God's greatest gift is not always what he puts in our hands, it's what he does in our hearts when we seek him first. You know, we live in a world that constantly tells us to chase more, more success, more money, more comfort, more security, whatever it is, it tells us more, more, more.

Speaker

If we're not careful, even our faith can begin to sound like another version of that same pursuit. We may begin seeking God not because He is our greatest treasure, but because we hope He will hand us the treasure we truly want. But what if we have misunderstood that promise? What if Jesus was never calling us to chase blessings, but to chase the kingdom? What if Psalm thirty seven was never about God giving us every earthly desire, but about God becoming our deepest desire?

Speaker

Jesus said in Matthew six, verse thirty three, but seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. And David wrote in Psalm thirty seven verse four, Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. These verses are powerful. They are comforting, they are hope filled, but they are also often misunderstood. Some hear these promises and immediately think of material blessings. Some even preach these verses that way. They suggest if I seek God, maybe life gets easier. If I delight in God, maybe I'll gain success. If I follow him, maybe hardships disappear. Yet Jesus was speaking to people burdened by worry over daily necessities, food, clothing, survival.

Speaker

He was not promising luxury. He was redirecting priority. He was saying stop building your life around temporary concerns and build it around the eternal reign of God. Seek first his kingdom, not second, not when convenient, and certainly not after personal ambition.

Speaker

Seek first. That means before everything, before the career, our bank account, and personal comfort. In fact, later Jesus would say that we need to commit to him even before family.

Speaker

When we seek first the kingdom, hope begins to take shape and come into focus. Because when we seek the kingdom first, we stop asking how can God serve my plans? And we begin asking, How can my life serve his purpose? That shift changes everything.

Speaker

Psalm thirty seven offers a similar truth. It says delight yourself in the Lord. That is more than casual religious behavior. It's a lot more than occasional gratitude. And it is certainly not treating God as some kind of Santa Claus who showers us in physical things.

Speaker

To delight in the Lord means we find our deepest joy in who He is, and we find comfort in His truth, faithfulness, and mercy, and we seek to draw close to Him in every way. When we do that, something extraordinary happens. Our desires begin to change. The world trains us to desire wealth, but God teaches us to desire holiness.

Speaker

The world pushes us toward status, but God calls us toward surrender. The world says get more. God invites come closer. When God becomes our delight, our hearts are reshaped. We are no longer simply what our flesh craves. We begin to desire what honors Him.

Speaker

And when our greatest desire becomes knowing God, then Psalm thirty seven becomes alive in its deepest meaning. It grants that desire fully, because those who seek him will find him. Here is where hope grows stronger.

Speaker

Sometimes God provides materially, sometimes he opened doors of opportunity, sometimes he blesses invisible ways. But his greatest provision is always deeper. It's peace when life is uncertain, its strength when burdens are heavy, its purpose when suffering feels confusing, forgiveness when sin feels crushing, and hope when the road feels dark. And above all else, His presence is within us.

Speaker

This world teaches us to measure blessings by what we own, that God teaches us to measure blessings by who we belong to. So many have wealth and are still empty, and so many have physical comfort but are still restless. So many have worldly success and are spiritually poor.

Speaker

But when our heart belongs fully to God, we possess a treasure this world cannot steal. When we seek the kingdom, we find the king, and serving the king is the treasure. Maybe today you're carrying fear, fear about finances, health, family, or the future.

Speaker

Jesus understands those fears. He doesn't shame us for them. He lovingly helps us lift our eyes higher. In Matthew chapter eleven, starting in verse twenty eight, Jesus invites us to bring those burdens to him, to let him carry them for us. It isn't that burdens disappear. It's that we're not carrying them alone. And our Lord's shoulders are so much wider and stronger than ours.

Speaker

Our life is more than what we lack, our worth is more than what we own. Our hope is more than what this world provides. So we seek first the kingdom. We delight ourselves in the Lord.

Speaker

The Father knows what we need, the Father sees what we carry, and the Father has never stopped being faithful. When we seek the kingdom and delight ourselves in the Lord, our hope is built on the unshakable character of God. So today, the deeper question is is God Himself my greatest desire? Because when He is, everything changes. Seeking first the kingdom clarifies life.

Speaker

Delighting in the Lord deepens joy. And when our heart finally understands that God Himself is the treasure, we stop chasing the fading things and start living in lasting hope and a life for eternity.

Speaker

If you have been seeking the wrong treasure, today can be your turning point. Jesus calls us not only to admire the kingdom, but to enter it.

Speaker

Hope begins when we place our faith in Christ, we turn from sin in repentance, we confess Him boldly, and we surrender in baptism. Where we come into contact with His saving blood, and we rise to walk in newness of life.

Speaker

So let's seek the kingdom, and we will find the King. Let's delight in the Lord, and we will discover the treasure that cannot fade.

Speaker

Friends, thank you for walking this journey with me. Until next time, let's keep moving forward together towards hope. If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who may need hope today and remind them no one walks alone. And remember, in all things, we give glory to God our Father.
