Today we're talking about a moment that changes many lives forever, a brush with death. Whether it comes through illness, an accident, or another unexpected crisis, these experiences have a way of reshaping our perspective and helping us see what truly matters.
In this episode, I'll share part of my own journey through leukemia and reflect on how facing mortality deepened my understanding of hope, faith, and the promises of Christ. Together, we'll explore how life's most difficult valleys can reveal the strength of a hope that reaches beyond our circumstances.
I'm glad you're here. Let's continue our journey toward hope together."

Hello friends, I'm your host, Dr. Dave Leighton, and thank you for joining me on our journey to hope. This podcast is a place where together we explore how to discover, sustain, and sometimes regain hope. Wherever you're listening, let's take a deep breath, open our hearts, and continue this journey towards hope. And remember, no one walks alone. In today's episode, I'm looking at a very serious point in many people's life that obviously changes their life. I experienced it, as have so many. There are moments in life when everything changes in a single conversation, a single diagnosis, a single moment when the world seems to stop. For some it's an accident. For others it may be on a battlefield. For many, it is the day illness suddenly becomes personal. A brush with death has a way of stripping away illusions and revealing what truly matters. When we face our own frailty, our mortality, we begin to understand how fragile life can be. Yet for the Christian, this realization can also uncover something even greater. Our deepest hope has never rested merely in physical survival. Our greatest hope is found in Jesus Christ. My brush with death came when I was stricken with the cancer leukemia. Surviving cancer is powerful. Yet even more powerful is discovering that whether in sickness or health, in fear or peace, our lives are anchored in the one who conquered death itself. Cancer may threaten the body, but in Christ, hope reaches beyond the body to the soul. This is where survival becomes more than recovery. It becomes revelation. A life-threatening illness often brings us face to face with questions that many avoid. Questions like what truly sustains us? What happens if healing does not come easily? Where do we turn when medicine reaches its limit? For the believer, these questions can deepen our understanding of Jesus in profound ways. Before illness, hope may seem to feel like optimism. After walking through deep suffering, hope becomes something far stronger. Biblical hope is not wishful thinking, it is confident assurance rooted in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Jesus did more than teach about life. He declared I am the resurrection and the life. Well that truth changes everything. Because of Jesus, hope is not merely that we might get better. Hope is that we belong to Him. Hope is knowing that our Savior walks with us through every frightening diagnosis, painful treatment, even lonely and uncertain nights. When fear whispers, What if this is the end? Jesus answered, I am with you always. When weakness says you may not have enough strength, Jesus reminds us, My grace is sufficient for you. When suffering presses hard, Christ centered hope lifts our eyes beyond present pain to eternal promise. This relationship with Jesus transforms survival itself. We begin to see each day not simply as borrowed time, but as purposeful time. Every sunrise becomes an opportunity to glorify the one who carried us. Every hardship can deepen dependence, and every scar can testify that faith held firm. The resurrection of Jesus gives us a living hope, one that illness or injury or even death cannot destroy. This means our greatest peace is not found in test results alone, though we rejoice in healing. Our deepest peace is found in knowing that our Redeemer lives. A brush with death often teaches us that hope in Christ is not shallow. It is not built on circumstances, it is not limited by prognosis, and it is not shaken by uncertainty. True hope is in that relationship with Jesus. And because we know Jesus, we know we are loved. And because we know Jesus, we know we are forgiven. And because we know Jesus, we know death does not hold final victory. And because we know Jesus, we know our suffering is never wasted. This is why some of the strongest faith is often forged in hospital rooms, treatment centers, and quiet prayers in the dark. We discover that Jesus is not distant. He is present. Sometimes surviving a serious illness does not preserve life. It awakens us to the richness of walking closely with Christ. What once may have been intellectual belief often becomes deep personal trust. We begin to understand more clearly Paul's words in Philippians chapter one verse twenty one when he says to live is Christ. Survival can sharpen our awareness that Jesus is not only savior for eternity, but sustaining Lord for every single day. A brush with death can change how we see life. A deeper relationship with Jesus changes how we see everything. In my case, surviving leukemia reminded me that life is precious, and walking with Christ reminds me of even more. Our hope is greater than survival alone. It is greater than remission. It is greater than fear. Our hope is Jesus, because He lives, we live with courage, we live with purpose, and we live with living hope. Sometimes the valleys we go through teach us what the mountaintops could never. Jesus is enough. Jesus is near. He is our hope now and forever. Well, friends, if you have not become a child of God through Jesus, you can take care of that. First, you need to believe that Jesus is Lord and that our hope and salvation is found only in him. You have to repent of your current life and turn to following Jesus as your Lord and Master. And then you must enter into Christ through baptism, being fully immersed in water. As Paul speaks in Romans 6, this brings us into contact with the blood of Christ, which he gave to cleanse our sins. There's nothing magical about the water. It simply represents our surrender to him in obedient faith. We symbolically take part in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. But all of that is just the beginning and what a wonderful beginning it is. We then resolve to live each day, gaining knowledge of our Savior and His will for our life. And we live to the best of our ability according to that will. If you want to know more about this, please contact me and we'll talk about it. Well, friends, thank you for walking this journey with me. Until next time, let's keep moving forward together towards hope. If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who may need hope today and remind them no one walks alone. And remember, in all things, we give glory to God our Father.
