Our Journey to Hope
We all have the potential to have our hope challenged by life events, or we know someone whose hope is currently being challenged.
I invite you to explore this critical topic with us and please, share this with others. Our goal is to strengthen our own hope while helping others discover, sustain, or regain hope.
Remember, no one walks alone.

Life brings moments when the road feels steep, uncertain, and shadowed by circumstances we never expected. In today’s episode, we’ll explore one of the most comforting truths found in Scripture: valleys are part of the journey, but they are never the end of the story.
Whether you are walking through grief, uncertainty, discouragement, or simply carrying a heavy heart, this episode is a reminder that the Shepherd still walks beside His people.
So take a deep breath, settle your heart, and join us as we continue moving forward together toward hope. Because no matter how dark the valley may seem, no one walks alone.

Hello friends, I'm your host, Dr. Dave Leighton, and thank you for joining me on our journey to hope. This podcast is a place where together we explore how to discover, sustain, and sometimes regain hope. Wherever you're listening, let's take a deep breath, open our hearts, and continue this journey towards hope. And remember, no one walks alone. Today I want to talk about something every one of us experiences sooner or later, and that's life's valleys. We enjoy the mountaintop moments of life, those times when everything seems clear, the view is beautiful, and the path ahead feels easy. But if you've lived long enough, you know that life is not lived entirely on mountaintops. Sometimes the road leads downward, sometimes the path takes us into valleys, and valleys may come in many forms. It might be a medical diagnosis we did not expect. It might be financial insecurity or a broken relationship, or simply a time when discouragement just hangs over us like a heavy fog. Well, if you find yourself in a valley today, I want you to know something important. You are not alone. One of the most comforting passages in Scripture is found in Psalm twenty three. You're very familiar with it. David writes, Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. You know something about that verse. David did not say if we walk through the valley, he said when we walk through the valley. Valleys are just part of the journey. But there's another important word in that verse. David says we walk through the valley, not into it to stay, and not trapped in it forever. We walk through it. Valleys are places we pass through on our journey of life. But while we're there, God often does some of his most important work in our hearts. Think about it this way Mountaintops inspire us, but valleys shape us. In the valley we learn things we may never learn anywhere else. We learn to trust when we cannot see the path ahead. We learn humility when our own strength is not enough. And we learn compassion for others who are hurting. And often it's in the valley that we discover just how near God really is. But there's another interesting truth about valleys. In the physical world, valleys often contain the most fertile soil. Rain water runs down from the mountains and collects there. Nutrients gather there, and the soil becomes rich and capable of producing life. Farmers know this well. They often plant their crops in the valleys because that's where the things grow best. And the same can be true in our spiritual lives. The valley of life can become fertile ground for planting seeds of faith. When people walk through hardship, hearts often become more open. Conversations become deeper, hope becomes more meaningful. And sometimes the testimony of someone who has walked through a valley with faith becomes the very seed that leads someone else towards the Lord. Your valley may not only be shaping you, it may also be preparing the soil for someone else. Your patience and suffering, your trust when answers are unclear, your kindness when life is difficult. All of these can plant seeds that point others to our Lord. Sometimes the greatest witness we have is not what we say on the mountaintop, it's how we walk through the valley. Shepherds in the ancient world often led their sheep through valleys. Those valleys contain streams of water and grass that help sustain the flock. But the valley could also be a dangerous place with shadows and narrow paths. The sheep were safe not because the valley was easy, they were safe because the shepherd was with them. And the same is true for us. God does not promise that we will avoid valleys. He promises his presence in them. Isaiah forty three reminds us when you pass through the waters, I will be with you. Notice again when you pass through, not if, not maybe, but when. Life's valleys do not mean God has abandoned us. Sometimes they are the very places where His presence becomes most real. Many people who have walked through deep valleys later say something surprising. They would never wish to repeat the experience, but they also would not trade what they learned there. Because in the valley they discover a deeper faith, a stronger hope, and a closer walk with God. So today, if you find that you're walking through a valley, remember these three simple truths. First, valleys are temporary. No valley lasts forever. The road always continues forward. Second, God is present. Even when circumstances are dark, his presence has not left you. And third, hope still lives in the valley. Sometimes hope is not loud. Sometimes it's very quiet, a soft whisper. Sometimes hope is simply the courage to take one more step. Well, friend, if you're walking through the difficult season right now, you're walking through one of those valleys, keep walking. Sometimes it's quiet. Sometimes hope is simply the courage to take one more step forward. Do not lose heart. The shepherd is with you. And the valley is not the end of the story. In fact, it may be a place where something new is growing. Seeds of faith, seeds of compassion, and seeds of hope. Well, friends, thank you for walking this journey with me. Until next time, let's keep moving forward towards hope. If this episode encourages you, share it with someone who may need hope today and remind them that no one walks alone. And remember, in all things, we give glory to God our Father.
